Fourteen

Early that evening, Kookie and I left the house with a vague excuse that we were going out to play. Aunt Birdie, who was engaged in deep conversation with Cromwell, lifted an absent-minded paw as though to let us know she’d heard me but didn’t care to comment. As I closed the door quietly behind us, I heard her complain to Cromwell that he never listened to her and that deciding their children’s futures was important.

With Kookie in one arm and an actual box of cookies in the other, I hurried down the steps before Birdie could think twice about questioning me. “I don’t think she’s happy with your dad,” I whispered to Kookie.

Her other-worldly eyes met mine. No.

I knew my cat aunt and Cromwell argued about Mochi’s future and his possible life as Gertie’s familiar. I probably should have spoken up for Gertie like I’d said I’d do, but I simply didn’t have time. Amelia would already be on her way to Caden’s office for her interview, so I needed to hurry.

We slipped into my car, I started the engine, and we embarked on our journey to meet the enigmatic and powerful witch, Winona. I followed the directions Valerie had given me and parked alongside the highway at the edge of town, not wanting to chance Winona’s long driveway might be difficult to navigate.

We ventured down the long and narrow gravel drive leading to Winona’s cottage as glimpses of the setting sun cast a weak glow through the towering pines, making it seem much later. The few rays that did make it through painted the forest in shades of amber and shadow.

My heart pounded with a mix of excitement and trepidation in anticipation of meeting the old witch. Valerie had said she was kind, and I had a perfectly good reason for visiting. Still, I prayed to the great Goddess that Winona wouldn’t suspect my ulterior motives.

Kookie, ever the curious and adventurous familiar, squirmed until I loosened my grip on her, and she crawled onto my shoulder, her little paws gripping tightly. Being in the unfamiliar forest left me leery, so I wrapped my fingers around her soft body, attempting to pull her back. “Come here where I can keep you safe.”

She resisted, her eyes wide with curiosity. I want to see better, Evie.

Her warm breath tickled my ear while her whiskers brushed against my cheek, and I loosened my hold. “Fine, but make sure you don’t fall off. I don’t know what might be around us. Wild animals, or whatever, so we need to be careful.”

Her purrs vibrated into me. Let me help you. I have good senses.

I knew she believed I was an incapable and vulnerable human, but when it came to dangerous animals, she was right.

The path wound its way through the trees, and the crunch of fallen leaves and the distant call of an owl accompanied our steps. The forest’s enchantment grew stronger, and it seemed as if whispering woodland secrets beckoned us forward. I hoped I could trust my senses that told me we were in a benign place.
